How to Become an MTV Veejay
A veejay for MTV is a very sought out position for many people. MTV hires veejays more on personality than on credentials. Because of this, you don't need a ton of college or years of experience. Unfortunately though, it's still a very difficult gig to get. You will be competing with thousands of others for a position.
- Check the MTV website for upcoming auditions. They may not always be looking for new veejays, but MTV does hold auditions quite frequently. Your best chance for getting a veejay position is to audition as many times as it takes.
- Familiarize yourself with the job. You can do this by watching other veejays on MTV. Pay attention to how they portray themselves, and take note about what makes them likeable. You don't have to be a carbon copy of a present veejay, in fact it's better if you're not. You still want to know what MTV is expecting from their veejays and there is no better way of finding out then seeing it for yourself.
- Work on your interviewing skills. MTV veejays get to interview some of the most famous people in the world. The last thing you want to do is mess these interviews up. Even if you feel confident in your interviewing skills, when actually on the spot interviewing someone so famous you may find it's not as easy as it looks. Taking courses in public speaking may help.
- Watch other MTV interviews. When a question is asked your response to their answer will not always be written on your cards. You may need to be able to come up with witty things to say on your own. Watch other interviews and when a question is answered, try to think of your own response before the other veejay does. This will give you practice thinking on your feet.
- Never give up. If you get an audition and you don't make it the first time don't quit. Continue to audition and show them you are what they are looking for.
