How to Become an Office Supplies Sales Rep

Office supply businesses employ sales representatives to gain new clients, provide customer service and identify new areas of growth within the company's current customer base. Some office supply specialists work with commercial organizations as an outside sales representative, while others help customers inside the office supply store.

  1. Research the job requirements for office supplies sales representatives. In most cases, employers require applicants to have a high school diploma. Although a college degree may not be necessary, those with a degree in communications, marketing or business will be better equipped to handle the demands of this type of position.

  2. Tailor your resume for an office supply representative position. Highlight any skills and experience that make you a better fit for the position. Include organizational skills, customer service experience and computer training. If you have prior sales experience in a different industry, focus on high sales recognition awards or achievements.

  3. Decide which places to apply. Check online job websites, classified advertisements and newspapers. Consider applying at large office supply retailers and locally owned suppliers.

  4. Apply for the position. Most national office supply chains offer a convenient online application service. If the office supply companies in your area do not offer Internet employment applications, visit the business and ask for an application. Speaking with the manager may increase the likelihood of an interview.

  5. Call the company to request an interview. The application review process can be slow, but many companies appreciate a sales applicant that actively pursues the position.

  6. Interview for the position. Dress professionally. Remain confident throughout the interview, and ask the interviewer questions about the position as well.

  7. Send a thank you card or email to the interviewer.

  8. Contact the person responsible for hiring about a week after the interview. Ask if a decision has been made, and thank the person for the opportunity.
