How to Budget for Financial Security

Budget is one of the most dreaded words in the English language. This is mostly due to the initial misconception, that if you are on a budget you are denying yourself of any enjoyment. With careful planning, however, you could create a budget that helps you to achieve your financial goals while allowing yourself a few simple pleasures.

How to Budget for Financial Security:

Step 1: Download Personal Finances 4.0 from the
Free Downloads Center. The software is free and has preset categories to generate your budget.

Step 2: Enter all of your income sources. This includes: wages, bonuses, commissions, dividends and rental property income.

Step 3: Enter your monthly expenses. These expenses include your rent and/or mortgage payments, food and your utilities. You should also include intermittent expenses that include: gifts, car repairs, clothes and medical expenses.

Step 4: Track every penny you spend. Select Accounts to add your bank account, savings and credit card accounts. Download the current month's transactions from each account. On the Account Menu you will select each individual account and click Download to transfer transaction information into the program. By tracking your transaction, you will determine whether you live within your means or overspend.

Step 5: Determine the amount you want to save. Set this amount aside before paying your bills. You could transfer this amount straight to the savings account or lock it away in a lock box.

Step 6: Monitor your budget. Enter new data as soon as possible. This includes entering each form of income as it arrives and make adjustments for utility bill increases.

Step 7: Eliminate unnecessary expenses without self-denial. For example, instead of spending excessive amounts on clothes at one time utilize layaway plans or make purchases when desired items are on sale. Instead of purchasing magazines individually purchase subscriptions. If you go to the theater a lot, consider attending matinee showings to save money. It is possible to have some enjoyment without breaking yourself.
