How to Build Dedication Memorial Plaques

Memorial plaques are a great way to remember a loved one or any special occasion. A handmade dedication plaque will always keep your memories close. You can make your own wooden dedication memorial plaque at home by using the right tools.

Things you'll need:

  • Hobby craft plaque

  • Woodburning tool

  • Find grad sandpaper

  • Wood stain or varnish

  • Rag

  1. Heat up your woodburning tool using the manufacture instructions on the packaging. Sketch your design or works onto your craft plaque, as you want for the woodburning tool to heat to the right temperature. A letter style guide can also be helpful to do this.

  2. Burn your design or wording into the craft plaque once the tool has reached the appropriate temperature. Go slowly and carefully to prevent from making any mistakes. Turn your woodburning tool off once you are finished and satisfied with your design or wording. Allow the plaque enough time to cool off.

  3. Use fine grate sandpaper to sand the edges along with the entire surface of the plaque. Lightly sand the plaque to prepare it to be stained or varnished.

  4. Apply your stain or varnish using a clean rag. Make sure you apply it evenly across the plaque to get the best results. Set your memorial plaque in a well-ventilated area and allow it to fully dry. The drying time can vary between 12 and 24 hours depending upon the size and stain or varnish type. Repeat this process as needed until it becomes the desired color that you want to achieve.
