How to Choose a Cremation Urn

How to Buy a Cremation Urn

If your loved one decided to be cremated before they passed away, someone will need to choose a cremation urn if they didn’t choose one before they passed away. It can be hard to select an urn for a precious loved one that has passed, but if the job has been left up to you there are some guidelines you can follow to help you.

  1. Decide on if you will be keeping the urn after the funeral is over. If you are going to keep it, you will pick out a different one than if you don’t keep the urn after you scatter the ashes.

  2. Visit a funeral home and look at the urns they have available. Just as in caskets, they will range in price, depending upon what they are made out of.  Some urns are made from maple, mahogany or stone. Other urns are made from bronze or brass. Think about what the loved one would like the best instead of what you like the best.  The funeral home may also have books with urns in them that you can purchase.

  3. Look online for urns. The funeral home is not the only place that sells urns. You can sometimes find urns at a better price by looking online. Use a search engine to search for urns that are sold online. Pick one out that you like and purchase it, if you don’t find one at the funeral home that you like.

  4. Think about where the urn will be placed. If it will be seen in your home, you will want to purchase a nicer urn. If you are going to bury it, some cemeteries require it to be biodegradable. If it will be placed in a mausoleum, make sure the urn follows their guidelines.

  5. Purchase more than one urn if you are sharing the ashes with other family members.
