How to Build Ice Fishing Bait

When your ice fishing, you need patience and the ability to deal with the cold. If your planning on going ice fishing and it would be your first time doing it, you need to know how to build and attach the proper live bait. Knowing how to rope sinkers and avoid frostbite are very important things too. By learning these methods, you can be on your way to having the best ice fishing trip ever.

  1. Purchase freshwater fish or minnow to use as your bait. You can find them at any outdoors or fishing supply store.

  2. Pick up one or two freshwater fish or minnow from the storage case. Put the minnow down for now. Hold the little fish net and employ the net in place of your hands to avoid cold water getting on your uncovered skin. Select one of the fishing hooks and connect the fishhook to the fishing line. Remove the extra line from the fishhook by cutting it with a utility knife.

  3. Connect the minnow to the fishhook and do it at the minnow's mouth.  Press the fishhook in the bottom lip of the minnow.  Make sure that the minnow is still alive and swimming.

  4. Grab one to two sinkers and join them to the line. Do it for nearly 3 to 4 inches over the fishhook and minnow. Squeeze the sinkers with your thumb and finger to shut it onto the line. Hold your pliers and position them around the sinkers. Press the sinkers together until the two sides come together. Join your bobber to your fishing line.

  5. Dry off the leftover water or moisture from your hands with a paper cloth or other absorbent material. This is important to do so you can avoid frost nip or frostbite on your figures. Connect the line to the fishing pole.
