How to Set Up Polar Ice Fishing Tip-Up

There are a handful of ways to ice fish. Ice fishing tip-up is one method of ice fishing different than the norm, and generally popular in warmer ice-fishing climates. In order to properly set up tip-up polar ice fishing, there are several steps to take to ensure everything is done correctly.

Tip-up polar ice fishing is a fairly popular rendition of traditional polar ice fishing. Instead of using a rod and reel, many fishermen use this method in warmer climates. In tip-up ice fishing, a flag raises in the air to signal a fish has bitten. In order to make sure this fishing method is successful, the contraption needs to be set up properly.

  1. Unfold the tip-up. When stored it is usually in a crossed position. You may have to unscrew a screw that holds the arms together. Once open, screw in the nut to keep the arms open.

  2. Add bait to your hook as normal. You will want some slack in the line when doing this.

  3. Open up your flag. Pull on it until it won't go any higher. There should be a wooden or metal tip-up on the flag, and should stay at the top of the reel arm.

  4. Carefully attach the flag to your trip mechanism. There should be instructions, but the process is very easy. Attach and pull the line off the reel. Pulling the line can determine what depth you want you bait to reside.

  5. Finally, carefully place the tip in the hole, making sure not to bump the flag against anything. Otherwise the flag will raise prematurely and can cause injury.
