How to Build a Ski Rack

Skiing is a great hobby since it involves the outdoors and lots of exercise.  Storing the skis can be difficult though.  Having a planned place for the skis allows packing for a ski trip easy and quick thus building a simple ski rack is a great solution.

  1. Lay the 2x4 down on the ground or a worktable and using the measuring tape and pencil draw a line down the middle of the 2x4 on the wider side.

  2. Follow the line you drew and using the measuring tape and pencil make a mark every one and a half inches.  Make the mark clear because this is where you are going to drill.

  3. Drill a hole only three-fourths the way through the 2x4 at some of the marked spots.  You will drill at the first two, skip the next two marks and then drill the next two.  Do this all the way down the board.

  4. Pour some wood glue and then push a dowel into the holes you just drilled.  The glue should come out of the hole a bit when the dowel is placed in the hole.  Use the hammer if it is too difficult to get a dowel inserted.

  5. Clean the glue that has come out of the holes with a damp towel.

  6. Find studs on the wall that you are going to hang the ski rack.  The studs are needed to guarantee the rack will stay on the wall and not fall with the weight of the skis.  Your stud finder will help with this job.  Mark where the studs are located.

  7. Wait for the wood glue to dry and then hang the rack.  Two screws are going to be used the hang the rack at each stud.  One screw should be above the pencil line on the 2x4 and the other should be under the line.

  8. Lock each set of skis together with the brakes on them or a ski strap.

  9. Hang the skis between each set of dowels and the ski poles can be hung on the dowel ends.
