The Difference Between Snowboard and Ski Pants

Although both skiing and snowboarding are winter sports enjoyed in the snow, there are subtle differences in the pants worn for each sport.  There is no rule stating that snowboarders cannot wear ski pants, and vice-versa, but many people prefer specialized sporting gear.

Industry Standards

Outdoor winter sporting companies have an industry-recognized standard termed the three-layer system.  The three-layer system protects skiers and snowboarders from cold temperatures, excessive wind, and moisture.  The first layer comprises the thermal base layer made from materials that wick moisture and sweat away from your skin.  The second layer is called the insulation layer, which provides warmth by keeping your own body heat in.  The third layer is composed of waterproof and windproof material while remaining breathable.

Similarities

Both ski and snow pants offer industry standards for snow sports.  Both are designed to be comfortable, lightweight, and provide a barrier to the temperature, snow, and the elements.  Both function similarly to protect your legs from getting wet and cold.  Either style of pants will work to protect you while skiing or snowboarding.  Both pants come with the option of padding in the knees, hips, and buttocks.

Differences

Ski pants are tapered and have a tighter fit than snowboard pants.  Snowboard pants are usually looser and baggier to accommodate snowboarding tricks and movements.  Some brands and types of snowboarding pants have more padding than ski pants in the buttocks, hips, and knee areas to help protect the snowboarder from impact during falls.
