How to Build a Speaker System

A speaker system consists of a group of speakers that provide sound in different locations and frequency ranges. The simplest speaker system uses two speakers -- one for the left channel and one for the right channel. Assembled speakers are readily available, or you can build your own speakers from the basic components.

Items Needed:

  • 3/4-inch medium density fiberboard

  • Circular saw

  • Speakers

  • Terminal cups

  • Wood screws

  • Speaker wire

  1. Cut out the pieces of the speaker enclosure from 3/4-inch medium density fiberboard with a circular saw. This example requires two 7-by-12-inch pieces for the front and back of the enclosure, two 6-by-12-inch pieces for the sides and two 6-by-8.5-inch pieces for the top and bottom.

  2. Cut a hole in the center of the front panel equal to the interior diameter of the speaker. This example assumes the speaker has an interior diameter of 5 1/4 inches.

  3. Cut a hole in the back panel for the terminal cup.

  4. Align the side edge of the top panel with the exterior surface of the side panel. Fasten these pieces together with wood screws at the corners of the top panel. Repeat this step with the other side panel.

  5. Fasten the bottom panel to the bottom edges of the side panels.

  6. Mount the speaker into the hole in the front panel and fasten it into place with screws. Mount the terminal cup into the hole in the back panel and fasten it into place with screws.

  7. Place the front panel into position on the speaker enclosure and fasten it into place with wood screws. Connect a 1-foot length of speaker wire to each of the two terminals on the speaker. Connect the other ends of these wires to the terminals in the terminal cup.

  8. Fasten the back panel for the speaker enclosure with wood screws.

  9. Repeat this procedure to build the other speaker for this system.
