How to Configure a VGA Cable

How to Build a VGA Cable

A VGA cable is for transmitting video signals, to link computers to the display monitors and used in high-definition televisions, computer games and other electronic devices. Although making you own VGA cable will not save you any money, it could be helpful if you cannot buy a cable while on holidays or in an area where it is not available.

Things You Will Need:

  • Cat 5 cable

  • VGA connectors

  • Wire stripper

  • Soldering iron

  1. Buy one of the shortest Cat 5 cables making sure you have enough cable to strip off some of the cable and hook it up to the television or computer. Strip off 1 inch of the Cat 5 outer insulation to expose the eight wires of different colors. Strip 3 mm of the internal wire insulation with a wire stripper. Don't rearrange or alter the wires.

  2. Solder the Cat 5 cable wires to the VGA connectors. Work carefully and wait for the wires to cool off before you cover them with the VGA connector housings to make it look better and to make it safer.

  3. Do the same thing you did in steps one and two on the other end of the Cat 5 cable to make sure both ends of the connection are able to send and received a signal and work as it should.

  4. Attach the cables, making sure you enclose the wires and that the cable is secure. Check the graphic card settings to make sure that the cable transmits images to keep you from having to watching a blank television or computer screen.
