Information About Cat Health

How to Buy Cat Health Insurance

Cat health insurance is offered to pet owners who want to protect themselves from costly veterinary bills.  To protect yourself properly look at insurance plans closely making sure that monthly rates and percentage payout on bills is reasonable and within your budget.

  • Locate an insurance provider that offers low monthly rates.  If your cat is not ill, you probably will not be going to the vet often and costly monthly rates will make it unreasonable to carry insurance on your cat.

  • Ask your veterinarian if they can offer advice on health insurance for your cat.  Your vet should be able to provide information on insurance companies that their office already works with meaning that you will not have to look around for an insurance company that carries your vet.

  • Find a cat health insurance company that offers different plans.  Being able to choose between plans will mean that you can find insurance that fits your specific needs.  This way you won't have to pay for services that you do not intend on using.

  • Make sure to look at the deductible and percentage payed for the insurance company you are looking at.  Some cat insurance companies have high deductibles and only pay out 75 percent of the vet bill.  This means that veterinary bills will still be high making the insurance unreasonable.

  • Some pet insurance companies will have a number of reasons that animas are not accepted on their plans.  If your cat has a pre-existing illness or injury, inquire if the insurance company will cover your pet.

  • Look at the policy closely for the insurance company that you are considering to see how payments are handled.  Many companies ask that you pay the vet and be reimbursed at a later date.  This means that you may have to pay large bills out of pocket and wait for a payment from the insurance company.  If you are uncomfortable with this, look for an insurance company that offers payments to the vet directly.
