How to Calibrate a Water Softener
Water softeners are used to decrease the acidity levels of the water supply running to your home. Acidity levels of water supplies are a combination of iron, rust and other deposits drawn from water reservoirs. By decreasing these acidity levels you decrease the amount of deposits that flow into your home.
- Schedule a water analysis of your water supply. Depending on your budget you could have this analysis performed by a water specialist in whom you would have to pay a large fee or you could have a technician who works with a water softener distribution company. Generally if you select the latter you should purchase the water softener from this distributor. However realize that this technician is acting as a representative of the distributor and could utilize this analysis to persuade you to purchase a more expensive water softener.
- Evaluate the test report that resulted from the water analysis to determine which water softener is right for your home. Compare the analysis data to the specifications listed on the water softener's packaging.
- Calculate the required harness level for the water softener. Determine the iron content reading. Take this figure and multiple it by 5. Then add that calculation to the hardness reading. For example if the iron content reading is 5 you multiply this number by 5 to get 25. If the hardness level is 30 then you would add 25+30 to get 55.
- Calibrate the water softener using the result of the calculations you performed in step 3. Use the settings button found on the water softener to set this calibration to this result. Using the calculations in step 3 as an example you would simply push this setting button until the setting reaches 55.
