How to Change an Oil Pump on a Car

Any car owner is expected to know basic car maintenance such as oil changes or fixing tire flats. Sometimes, car owners prefer to maintain larger parts of their cars as well. Keeping a car maintained is oftentimes able to be performed by the car owner and may even save money in the long run.

Items needed:

  • Car manufacturer's manual

  • Wrenches and sockets

  • New oil pump

  • Oil pan

  • Rubber mallet

  • Car jack

  1. Read the car manufacturer's manual. This manual will provide detailed information about the car and the location of parts within the car. Many manuals will come with instruction manuals that will allow the car owner to make small repairs on his or her own.

  2. Place the vehicle in a secure location and put in use the emergency brake. Use the car jack to raise the vehicle. The jack will state how far it can be raised.

  3. Raise the hood of the vehicle.

  8. Replace the oil pump with the new oil pump.

  9. Tighten the bolts back into the new oil pump.

  10. Scrape off any old grease and change the old gasket

  11. Place the drain plug back into the oil pan.

  12. Lower the vehicle from the jack and then place new oil back in the oil pump.
