How to Check Water Well Pressure
For those who have a well system in their homes, it is important to keep an eye on the pressure of the water. This is due to the fact that having extremely low or extremely high pressure can damage the appliances that are found within your home.
What You Will Need
- Pressure gauge
- Attach your pressure gauge to an outside faucet.
- Shut off the water to any appliances and make sure all inside faucets are turned off.
- Open the outside faucet that is attached to the pressure gauge.
- Take the water pressure reading from the pressure gauge.
- Open a faucet on the inside of the building.
- Check the pressure gauge for any pressure variations as the well pump goes through it’s on and off cycles. Allow it to go through a couple of cycles to gain an accurate reading of the pressure in your well system.
Additional Information
- For best results, choose an interior sink with no filter screen and can produce a rapid flow. A bathtub faucet or utility sink are often the best choices.
- Should the pressure vary more than 10 pounds between the pump’s cycles, there may be the indication of a problem, such as being water logged or having a pressure tank which is undersized.
- Many standard wells will already have a pressure gauge installed on the tank fitting and can be located in the front of the pressure tank. Should yours be broken or missing, you may want to consider replacing the gauge.
