How to Choose a Water Filtration System

Using a water filter can protect you and your family from bacteria and chemicals that are sometimes found in the public water supply.  Choose the right water filtration system for your home by setting a budget and selecting the best type of water filter for your unique needs.

  1. Decide on a budget.  While many water filtration systems are very affordable, some can be expensive depending on the type you choose and the installation process it requires.  For example, faucet-mounted systems are inexpensive while in-line water filters can cost a lot of money because they need to be attached directly to the plumbing system.

  2. Select the type of water filter you want to buy.  There are many different water filtration systems you can choose from depending on your budget and needs.  Whole-house filters are attached to the main water line in your home to remove contaminants from water before it enters your plumbing system.  They are widely available and easy to install.  Facet-mounted filters are very small and usually inexpensive.  They are attached to the faucet and have different capabilities depending on the model and its price.  The downside to using a facet-mounted filter system is that you’ll have to replace the filter frequently to keep it working at its best.  Under-sink filters mostly remove odor and bad taste, but some models can also remove bacteria and other contaminants.  Countertop filters are typically the cheapest water filtration systems you can buy.  They come in a variety of designs, but many resemble jugs of water with filters attached to the top.

  3. Buy the appropriate water filtration system for your home.  Some filters can only be used with specific types of plumbing systems.  It’s very important to ensure that you’ll be able to install your new water filter without a problem if you plan on buying a complex system.
