How to Clean a Fridge Water Filter

The newer refrigerator models come with a filter to purify the water as well as the ice. Most models have the filter near the bottom area of the refrigerator. This filter should be removed and cleaned if you do not have a new one available.

Materials Needed

  • Filter

  • Refrigerator manual

  • Water

  • Mild liquid dish detergent

  1. Locate the filter on the refrigerator. It could be behind the grille near the bottom or it could be on the inside of the refrigerator in the rear. Use the manual that came with the refrigerator if you have difficulty locating the filter.

  2. Remove the filter by turning it in a clockwise direction and pulling it off. Some models may require you to push a button that will automatically release the filter. Use the manual if you need help removing the filter.

  3. Once you have removed the filter, take it over to the garbage pail. Hit the filter lightly to remove any loose debris from it. This will make cleaning the filter easier.

  4. Fill a sink half way with water and add a few drops of mild liquid dish detergent to the water. Swish your hand around in the sink to mix the water and detergent.

  5. Place the filter in the cleaning solution and allow it to soak for 20 minutes. Gently swish the filter around in the solution. Drain the cleaning solution from the sink.

  6. Turn on the water and place the filter under the stream of water. Allow the filter to stay under the water until all of the soap is completely removed and the water runs clear. Make sure the water is not turned on too high so the filter is not damaged.

  7. Place the filter on a dish rack and allow it to completely dry. Put the filter back into place on the refrigerator. Be gentle because the filter is fragile.
