How to Clean Cloudy Wine Glasses

Whether having a glass of wine alone or with a group of friends, partaking from wine glasses that have turned hazy can be a source of embarrassment and can effect your overall enjoyment. Unfortunately, clouding of wine glasses can happen regardless of how expensive they are or how thoroughly you clean them. The key is to know how to remove the clouding when it occurs.

Directions:

  1. Place wine glasses in a basin with the stems facing upward and the mouth of the glass facing down. Take care not to overcrowd the basin to avoid accidentally breaking them.

  2. Pour enough vinegar slowly into the basin until the bowls of the wine glasses are covered completely.

  3. Leave the glasses submerged in the vinegar for one hour minimum.

  4. Remove the glasses and set them aside before pouring the vinegar from the basin and down the drain.

  5. Run warm water into the empty basin along with a small amount of mild dishwashing detergent. Fill the basin until it is full of sudsy water, taking care that it does not get overly hot.

  6. Dip your wine glasses into the warm soapy water and wash thoroughly using a soft cloth or dish rag.

  7. Rinse the glasses with warm water and dry using a soft cloth. Take care while drying to avoid getting fingerprints and smudges on the glass.

  8. Hold the glasses up to the light. If there are smudges, repeat the soaking and washing process a second time.

TIPS

  • While polishing the glasses dry, take care to use only a dry towel. This means if the towel you are using gets overly wet, replace it with a clean, dry one.

  • An alternative to soaking wine glasses in vinegar is to wipe them down with vinegar. Once wiped down, place vinegar soaked paper towels inside of the cloudy glasses and allow them to sit undisturbed. After several hours, wash with warm, sudsy water, rinse and dry thoroughly.
