How to Clean Refrigerator Water Filters

A refrigerator water filter keeps the ice and water dispensed from the appliance tasting great. It removes impurities that affect the quality of the water. A dirty filter makes the refrigerator less energy efficient. Cleaning the refrigerator water filter allows the device to work at its peak, while maintaining fresh water and ice at the same time.

What You'll Need:

  • Muriatic acid

  • Bucket

  • Water hose

  • Long-handled plastic spoon

  • Rubber gloves

  • Protective goggles

  1. Find the water filter on the refrigerator. On most models, the filter is located on the bottom of the appliance, near the grill or on the right side of the base. If the filter is difficult to locate, read the manufacturer's manual for the particular model. Carefully remove the water filter.

  2. Mix 2 cups water and 2 cups muriatic acid in the bucket. Wear rubber gloves and protective goggles to protect yourself from the dangerous chemical. With the long-handled plastic spoon, gently stir the mixture for several seconds.

  3. Spray the water filter with a water hose to remove any large particles. Place the water filter in the muriatic acid mixture. Be careful not to splash any of the liquid. Set the bucket in a safe place, away from kids and pets. Allow the water filter to soak in the bucket for 72 hours.

  4. Remove the water filter from the bucket. Rinse it thoroughly with the water hose to remove all of the muriatic acid solution. Place the newly cleaned water filter back in the refrigerator. Water filters should be cleaned at least once every six months.
