How to Clean Sofas

Cleaning a sofa on a regular basis can keep it looking like new. Besides vacuuming the sofa, it is a good idea to treat it with a cleaning product when it starts to get dirty. The best product to use to clean the sofa depends on the material it is made of.

  1. Remove the cushions from your sofa and pick up any loose items. Vacuum the front of the sofa and then pull it out from the wall so you can do the back. Vacuum the sofa cushions and pillows and inspect your sofa to see if you need to clean it with a chemical.

  2. Look for the tag on the sofa to find out the material it is made of. Do some research to determine what type of chemical to use for cleaning the sofa material. Buy the cleaning product and read the label to find out how to apply the chemical to your sofa.

  3. Use the right applicator when you clean the sofa. If the label indicates that you should use a soft bristled brush it is a good idea to buy one that has never been used before. Apply the cleaning product and use the brush to scrub your sofa.

  4. Avoid sitting on the sofa until the chemical completely dries. Check the sofa fabric to see if it is clean and make sure any spots you noticed are now gone. If the sofa is still not as clean as you would like, you may want to contact a professional furniture cleaning service.

  5. Look in the Yellow Pages or ask a friend for a cleaning service to use. Tell the clerk who answers what type of sofa you have and find out the cost for a cleaning. Set up an appointment to have a cleaner come to your home if you decide to use the service.
