How to Clean a Stained Wine Decanter

How to Clean a Crystal Wine Decanter

If you have a crystal wine decanter, you should clean it properly to remove any stains. Clean the inside and outside of the decanter with soap and warm water using a sponge for gentle cleaning.  Once the decanter is clean, use a denture cleaning tablet to remove the stains from the inside of the container.

Items Needed:

  • Dish soap

  • Sponge

  • Denture cleaning tablet

  • Thin towel

  1. Wash the outside of the decanter with dish soap and warm water.  This should be done with a sponge for gentle cleaning.  Make sure to hold your decanter firmly while washing it so it does not slip out of your hands.

  2. Pour warm water and a small amount of dish soap into the inside of your decanter. Place your hand over the decanter opening and shake the water around.  Pour the soapy water out of your decanter and rinse it with cold water to remove the soap.

  3. Place a denture cleaning tablet inside your decanter and fill it with warm water. Denture cleaner is used because it will remove stains from the inside of the container.  Let the decanter sit overnight and pour the solution out in the morning. Rinse your decanter at least twice with water making sure the denture cleaner has been removed.  Your decanter should be clean and free from stains once it is rinsed out.

  4. Push the edge of a thin towel into the opening of your decanter to dry out the inside of it.  This can be done using the handle of a spoon or a pencil.  Push the towel in a few inches leaving the rest of the towel hanging out.  Place your decanter in a drying rack upside down and allow the towel to absorb the moisture from the decanter.  Let your decanter sit overnight and remove the towel.
