How to Clean a Shag Rug

Shag rugs are beautiful and thick but they can accumulate dirt and hide it much easier than other types of rugs. If they are cleaned when needed, they will last a long time. The rugs can be expensive to have professionally cleaned when they are not taken care of and cleaned regularly.

Materials Needed

  • Vacuum

  • Shampoo machine

  • Shampoo

  1. Remove the rug to an area where it can be shaken. Shaken the rug to remove any loose dirt and debris. Shake the rug on a regular basis to keep it free of dirt.

  2. Place the rug on the floor and use a vacuum to go over the rug to remove any remaining dirt. Be careful around the edges of the rug to prevent it from being damaged. Vacuuming should also be done on a regular basis to help the rug last longer.

  3. Fill a shampoo machine with soap according to the directions. Go over the rugs to clean the rugs. Shampooing should only occur twice a year to keep the rugs looking clean and smelling fresh. Turn the rug over and shampoo the back of the rug.

  4. Place the rugs outside on a flat surface and allow them to dry. Turn the rug over and allow the opposite side to completely dry. Avoid placing the rugs on the grass so they will not become soiled again.

  5. Once the rugs are completely dry, vacuum them so their shape can return. This will also remove the hardness from the fibers of the rug and return them to their soft state.
