How to Clean and Lubricate Clocks

When your favorite clock stops working it is not always necessary to dispose of it. It may need to be cleaned and lubricated to make it operational. This is something that can be easily done without having to utilize the services of a professional service.

How to Clean and Lubricate Clocks

  1. Gently open the clock to expose the inner mechanisms.

  2. Use a fan to remove any dust, being careful not to touch any of the pieces with your hands which could cause damage.

  3. Dip a saddle brush in benzene and gently clean the spindles and spindle holes. Continue on to clean the teeth in the escapement wheel, which is what causes the movement of the clock.

  4. Wipe the brush on a clean towel and continue the process until you do not see any more dirt. Once it is clean, allow the parts time to completely dry.

  5. Apply a dab of clock oil on a toothpick and put it in the spindle holes.

  6. Use a small brush to oil the teeth of the escapement wheel. Do not oil the entire component.

  7. Put the clock back together.
