How to Oil and Clean a Chime Clock

For chime clocks to work, they must be properly maintained. Cleaning and oiling your chime clock are two of the most important aspects of chime clock maintenance. Cleaning and oiling the clock prevent it from rusting or becoming tarnished and helps it keep accurate time.

Items Needed:

  • Feather duster

  • Furniture polish

  • Rags

  • Brass polish

  • Clock oil

  • Use a feather duster to brush away any dirt or dust that might have settled on the outside of the chime clock. Be gentle, and brush lightly, especially when dusting around the clock face and gears.

  • Spray furniture polish on a rag and use it to wipe down the outer parts of the chime clock. This includes the hands and clock face. Be careful not to move the hands because this will affect the accuracy of the time. Do not use the furniture polish on the clock face numerals because it could peel off the paint or stickers. If the clock has a glass door or glass that surrounds it, use window cleaner to wipe it clean.

  • Use a damp cloth to clean the clock face numeral. Gently wipe on and around the numerals to remove dirt and dust. Do not scrub the numerals because this could damage them.

  • Use brass polish to clean the brass weights and any other parts of the clock that may be made of brass. Spray the brass cleaner on a rag and apply it to the clock. The brass polish gives the clock a shiny appearance.

  • Locate the inner gears of the clock. They are usually behind the clock face. Sprinkle two small drops of oil on each gear. Locate the oil sink on the outside of the clock face and fill it halfway. Add a small amount of oil to the gears that spin or move the weights.
