How to Repair Chime Clocks

Chime clocks are elegant and distinguished clocks that add character to any home.  One of the main characteristics of this clock is the chimes.  The chimes produce sound every time they strike the hour.  The sound differs depending on the clock model or if the chimes need repair.

Materials

  • Cotton gloves

  • Pliers

  • Clock lubricant

Method

  1. Remove the glass face of the clock using the pliers.  Reach into the clock and grab the bottom of the pendulum to stop the motion.

  2. Locate the nut holding the minute hand and remove it using pliers.  Pull it gently to avoid damaging it, and set it aside.

  3. Reattach the minute hand making sure you secure the nut without making it too tight.  A very tight nut will affect the rotation required to set the correct time.

  4. Set the clock to start the chimes at the hour.  Turn the hour hand clockwise once after you have set the minute hand.

  5. Swing the pendulum gently to get it back in motion.  Make sure the clock is working and wait for the chimes to strike the hour.

  6. Inspect the rest of the clock if the chimes fail to sound.  If the spring is rusty and ruined, you will need to replace it.  Oil the springs and the gear wheels before you replace the cover.

  7. Adjust the clock weights to make sure they are properly aligned.  The weights should be able to move freely.  If there are chains attached to the weights, you may need to untangle them.
