How to Connect Two Computers to One Broadband Modem

A broadband modem can bring high-speed Internet to your computer. If you get another computer, then you may wish to share that high-speed Internet connection with the second computer. One way to share the connection is to connect both of the computers to the broadband modem. Fortunately, this is a rather simple thing to do.

Supplies needed:

  • Router

  • Ethernet cables (optional)

  • Wireless cards (optional)

  1. Buy a router. A router is needed to connect the two computers to the broadband modem. There are many different kinds of routers to choose from. Some routers are more expensive than others. A reliable router is less likely to drop a connection. Decide if you want a wireless router. If you decide to get a wireless router, buy wireless cards for the computers if the computers do not have the cards already. If you decide to buy a regular router, buy Ethernet cables.

  2. Read the instructions manual that comes with the router. These instructions will show you how to set up the password and user name for that specific router.

  3. Connect the router to the broadband modem. In most cases the lights will turn green when the router is getting a signal from the broadband modem. The instructions for the router will tell you what color the lights should be.

  4. Connect the computers to the router. If you are using a wired connection, simply connect the Ethernet cables from the computer to the router. If you are using a wireless connection, use the Windows wireless connection wizard to detect the router and connect to it using the password that you made up. If you are using an Apple computer, the wireless network will be automatically detected.

  5. Test the Internet connection. Both computers should be able to easily access the Internet via the router.
