How to Control Fleas in a Dog Run

Fleas are a common problem for dogs and their owners alike because they can be quite difficult to get rid of. It is necessary to treat all areas where a dog frequently visits in order to properly treat and kill them to prevent future infestations. All areas indoors and out, such as a dog kennel or run, will need to be treated.

Supply List

  • Lawnmower

  • Outdoor flea treatment

  • Laundry soap

  • Dish soap

  • Hand towel

  • Vacuum cleaner

  1. Cut the grass in and around the area where the dog run is located. You need to keep the grass as short as possible during the warm months in order to help prevent the area from becoming infested with fleas.

  2. Clean the surrounding area so that there is nowhere for fleas to hide. This includes any yard waste, weeds or garbage that could provide a place for the fleas to hide and breed.

  3. Remove any fabric that is located inside of dog houses and wash these items in hot water with a standard laundry soap to kill any fleas or eggs that may be present within the fibers of the fabric.

  4. Wash all dog toys, feeding bowls and any other hard surfaces by hand with dish detergent and water.

  5. Vacuum out the inside of the dog houses that are inside of the dog run if you have any. This is necessary to pick up any loose fleas or eggs that may be hiding here.

  6. Purchase an outdoor flea treatment to treat the dog run for fleas. There are chemical and organic varieties available for sale at pet supply stores. Choose the brand that you prefer.

  7. Treat the outdoor areas with the flea treatment you have purchased according to the manufacturer’s directions for application and use.

  8. Treat each dog that you own for fleas carefully before allowing it back into the kennel or it may contaminate the area again.
