How to Coordinate Wedding Colors With Armed Forces Uniforms

Active duty military personnel are required to wear their full dress uniform as a sign of respect at all special events and/or ceremonies including weddings. This presents quite a challenge for individuals trying to coordinate wedding colors with Armed Forces uniforms since these uniforms are navy blue. The only exception to this is the United States Navy's white dress uniform which coordinates with anything.

  • Avoid using navy blue for your bridesmaid dresses in the summer months especially if the wedding is outdoors. You may also find it difficult or quite expensive to incorporate navy blue into your wedding cake design.

  • Select colors included in the full dress uniform. For instance, both the United States Army and Marine dress uniforms have gold and/or red piping and ribbons. Both colors are not difficult to coordinate between bridemaids' dresses, flower designs and wedding cake creation.

  • Select colors included in ribbons and/or metals worn by the groom. Military ribbons and metals feature several primary colors you could use for your wedding colors. You could also select one of these primary colors and an additional color of your choice that compliment each other.

  • Consider shades of blue that coordinate well with navy blue. Avoid purple-based shades of blues as they may clash with the navy blue. Select lighter hues such as baby blue.

  • Avoid orange and orange-based colors. Unless you and/or your groom are diehard fans of the Auburn Tigers, the Tennessee Volunteers or the Texas Longhorns football teams you should avoid this potentially unflattering color.

  • Visit a bridal boutique. These stores specialize in bridal attire and possess color swatches that you could use to perfectly match your colors.
