How to Preserve Armed Forces Uniforms
Serving in the military is one of the noblest acts a person can do for their country. Some people who has had loved ones perish in the line of duty preserve their uniform as a way to cherish their memory.
If you or a loved one has served in the armed forces you should highly consider preserving the uniform and you can do it pretty easily.
- Remove any dust or dirt on the uniform before putting it away to be stored by using a brush on a vacuum cleaner. It is recommended that you cover the brush with a piece of nylon to lessen the strength of the suction because you do not want to cause any damage to the material.
- Use acid-free paper to pad both the inside and the outside of the uniform, which can be purchased at your local arts and crafts store. This should be used to protect the uniform from dust.
- Neatly fold the uniform and place it a case specifically made to store delicate items. It is preferred that you buy one that is large enough to store the item without it being folded. Some museums or historical societies will offer the containers for sale to the public.
- Store the container in a dark place that is cool and dry. Avoid storing it in the basement because most of them are subjected to high levels of moisture, which can cause severe damage to the uniform.
