  2. Select the fabric for your gown. Decide on a fabric to use for your gown. Ask questions if you're unsure about how to do this. An experienced seamstress should not have difficulty selecting fabric for a formal gown. Fabrics come in various textures and sheens, and some fabrics simply don't match certain patterns. Also, it is important to remember that some fabrics cost more than others. Pure silk is not a good choice for creating a formal gown due to the fragility and cost of the fabric.

Additionally, buy a yardstick, tape measure, chalk pencil, thread, scissors, sewing machine needles and any other supplies needed to complete your project. You'll also need an iron and ironing board.

  4. Read the pattern thoroughly before you cut anything. Read through the pattern a few times and be sure you understand the steps presented. Once you start cutting the fabric, and if there are any mistakes you cannot undo the mistakes. So it is important that you understand what is required in each step.

  5. Sew your spring formal dress together. After you have completed the pattern, take the time to examine the gown carefully to be sure it is put together correctly, and iron the seams.

  6. Try on your gown. Put on the gown, and check to see if any alterations are needed. Walk around in the gown to be sure that it is comfortable. Make sure that everything looks good.
