How to Find a Fish Farm

How to Create a Fish Farm Pond

If you own your own farm, you can create a fish farm pond yourself, but using professionals is recommended due to the heavy excavation that will take place. There are regulations that must be followed when building the pond. Once you create the plan for your fish farm pond, you can have it built in a few days.

  1. Contact that state department to inquire on what regulations you need to follow when building your farm pond. There are different rules; depending upon which state you live in. You will need to get a license, and follow the rules for depth and size limitations for your pond.

  2. Find where you want to put the pond. The soil at the area you pick will need to be dense so it will hold the water, or the pond will sink. Clay is the best choice. You will also need to build the pond near running water, such as a spring or creek, if at all possible.

  3. Decide on the size of your farm pond. Select the width and depth measurements. If you are using the pond only for fish, it should be deep. If you plan on boating on the pond, make it wider but shallower. Make sure the pond is at least 6 feet deep.

  4. Hire an excavator who has experience building farm ponds, if possible. Make sure the excavator installs plumbing to keep the water circulating. If you have experience with this type of equipment you can do it yourself, but most people will need to hire an excavator.

  5. Add fish to the pond. Make sure they have cover in the pond, such as an old tree or cinder blocks lying on the bottom of the pond. You can also purchase artificial habitat for the fish.
