How to Decorate With Contemporary Furniture
Decorating with contemporary furniture requires restraint. With the contemporary style, you have to refrain from overdoing it with too much furniture, too many accessories or too much color. Less is best when it comes to decorating in the contemporary style.
- Choose furniture in neutral colors. Black, white and browns are good choices. You want your furniture to have clean lines and a sleek appearance. While it needs to be comfortable, it should not be curvy or overstuffed. There should be no carvings or other decoration on any of the furniture pieces.
- Pay attention to the size of the room you are furnishing. Large pieces of furniture in a small room will look cluttered, and that is not a contemporary look. If your room is small, choose smaller pieces and get less furniture; perhaps just a small couch and chair.
- Bring in an accent color in cushions, a chair or the carpet. This color will be the accent used around the room in your accessories.
- Incorporate metals, stone or glass into the room. This can be on the furniture, decorative accessories or floor lamps.
- Keep lamps off of the tables. Floor lamps are used with contemporary furniture.
- Keep tables clean and uncluttered. One accent piece on a table is acceptable. Too much on the table will bring clutter into the room.
- Use black in the room in some capacity. It can be a furniture color, picture frames or cushions. Black is important, as it will anchor the room.
- Choose accessories with geometric lines. Simple vases need to be used for plants or floral arrangements.
