How to Design a Wine Label

If you have planted grapes and turned them into a special wine, you may want to create a label to show off your work. The wine’s label should be created and designed to match the style of your wine. Bold flavors deserve bold flavors, light and airy might need something whimsical. Learn the proper process to use when creating your wine label, this will ensure your wine is represented and distinguishable.

1. Decide on a design.

Look at the wine bottles currently on the market. Do you prefer a full bottle label or just a small rectangle or square? Think about what your wine represents, how it feels to you. Does it taste light and airy? Perhaps a light colored label with a swirl or vine border will be something you desire. If your wine has a full-bodied fruit taste, you might want to consider a photo of that fruit on your label. If your wine is full bodied and bold with flavor, your label might need bold coloring with block style letters.

2. Decide on material.

Labels come in a wide variety of materials. There is the clear stick on kind, the paper kind that you glue on, the self-stick and the bendable cardboard style. Depending on how you are having your labels printed will depend on what type of material you should decide. Say you are making labels at home with your personal computer and printer. Using Avery labels and their template for the shipping labels gives you perfect sized self-stick labels for a wine bottle. Cardboard might not work so well with home printing.

3. Pick your embellishments.

Do you want fancy wine labels? Wine that is marketed more towards women might have a little glitter splashed on the label. If your wine is geared more towards men, a tapestry cord or ribbon border will work well. You want your label to stand out; it is the space that will market your wine.

4. Choose a name.

If at this point you do not have a name picked out for your glorious creation, you will need one before you can print, stick and embellish your wine labels. Offer to host a sample party giving guests a sip. Give them paper and pencils so they can help you come up with a name based on how they feel the flavoring makes them feel. If you have a vineyard, many independent wine companies use the vineyard name.

Once you have these four items in place, you are ready to put your design together and begin creating your wine label. The possibilities are endless with your own creations.
