How to Diagnose PC Hardware Problems

It's not an easy task to diagnose PC hardware problems, especially when you are not so familiar with the inner workings of them. Having said that, there are some things that are easier to figure out than others. The worst case scenario, though, is that you have to take it to a professional if you can't figure it out.

Diagnosing PC Hardware Problems with a PC Hardware Scanner

  1. Run a PC hardware scan on your computer. The web site PC Pitstop has a program. OverDrive, that you can use for free to scan your computer. You need to sign up for an account, or run the program anonymously.

  2. Review the results of the scan. It will let you know if any hardware failed the test and will make suggestions as to what to do. This is your easiest and fastest route.

Diagnosing Without a PC Hardware Scanner

  1. Find a schematic of your brand of computer online if you are not familiar with its hardware. You need to know what you are looking at.

  2. Make note of the symptoms. For example, if there is a problem with your sound that should lead you to consider the possibility that there is a problem with the sound card, speakers, wiring or ports.

  3. Shut down the computer properly and unplug it.

  4. Remove the case from the hard drive tower. It is usually held into place with some screws in the back and should slide back or up.

  5. Examine the hardware that is most likely related to your problem to see if it appears faulty. For example, if your CPU fan is running frequently and is loud, take a look at it. It may need to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled. This is a common hardware problem.

  6. Check your cables and ports for related issues. For example, it is possible for a USB port to be weakened if used improperly, so check there.
