Knowing the steps to empty an old extinguisher can make the process move faster.
Fire extinguishers are a standard for houses, boats and workshops. From time to time refilling an extinguisher may not be the optimal choice. Old fire extinguishers may no longer meet local and state laws or may not be as useful, even refilled, as they once were. In these cases it is necessary to buy a new extinguisher and dispose of the old one properly. In order to dispose of an extinguisher you have to empty it completely.
- Move the fire extinguisher to an open and well-ventilated area. An outdoor area, such as a backyard, or open garage is an optimal choice. A container may be used to dispose of the extinguisher contents. Large household garbage cans are a suitable solution if a container is desired.
- Remove the pin that is located at the top of the fire extinguisher. Place the pin to the side so that you can replace it after you have emptied the fire extinguisher. The pin will slide back into place with no issues.
- Point the nozzle of the fire extinguisher away from yourself and away from any objects or other people. If you are using a container for the contents of the extinguisher, then you will want to point the nozzle into the container you have chosen.
- Press the lever on the fire extinguisher slowly. Allow the fire extinguisher to release the contents without applying too much pressure.
- Locate the pressure gauge on the fire extinguisher. Check the pressure levels. Make sure that all of the pressure has been released from the extinguisher.
- Contact your local fire department to ensure that the empty extinguisher can be disposed of in the regular garbage. Local and state laws may differ on proper disposal methods and your fire department will be able to advise you of these laws.
