How to Fix Solar Lights

Are your solar lights no longer working? When this is the case, you may find that you can do a simple fix without replacing them. Solar lights tend to have one of a few problems. Here are a few things you should try first.

If your solar lights are not working, chances are you can fix them yourself. You may need to replace the rechargeable batteries or check the light sensor. Try these simple repairs first to save yourself time and money.

  1. Check the solar light to see if it is on. Remove the assembly from the post and check the solar light. If it is off, the batteries may be dead. Check by covering the light sensor. If the light comes on, the batteries are most likely at fault. Replace the batteries with the same size. Choose nickel metal hydride ones if at all possible.

  2. If the light is on in bright daylight, the solar cell and batteries are probably working, but the light sensor has gone bad. Often this is due to the light sensor cover becoming opaque. Break this piece off and test the light sensor. Do this by taking the light into a closet to see if the light comes on. If it does, use clear packing tape as a covering and your light will work again.

  3. If the light refuses to work with new batteries or in light, replace the light sensor. This will depend on the model you have so you will need to research the correct steps. After doing so, you may need to recharge your battery or replace if they are too depleted.
