How to Get Started Raccoon Hunting

Most people simply hunt raccoons for the sport of it. Raccoons can put up quite a fight which is rewarding to someone when they are able to get one.  Of course some people hunt raccoons for their fur or their meat; the majority hunts raccoons just for fun. Regardless of your reason for hunting raccoons, there are a few surefire ways to increase your luck when hunting for raccoons.

  • Check with local authorities - Before beginning your raccoon hunting you will want to check with your local department of fish and game to see if you need a special permit in your area to hunt raccoons. This varies by state and county.

  • Go hunting at night - Hunting raccoons at night provides a couple of different benefits. Raccoons are nocturnal creatures so they will be more prevalent at night, and raccoons have poor eyesight so they will not see you coming at night as well.

  • Hunting dogs - Bring hunting dogs with you if possible. A trained hunting dog is an excellent asset to any hunter. Hunting dogs will save you time by tracking the raccoons for you.

  • Hunt during peak season - The best time to go raccoon hunting is between November and January. During this time of year a raccoon's coat is much thicker and more valuable. States may also make it legal during these month’s to hunt raccoons so that they do not overpopulate during the spring.

  • Know where to look - If a hunting dog is not available you will need to know where to look for raccoons when tracking them. Raccoons are usually found by a food or water source such as a fruited tree or a stream, pond or lake.

  • Do your homework - If you want to be successful at raccoon hunting you should read up on raccoons. Learn about their habits and patterns as much as you can. The better you understand the raccoon the better your chances are to be able to track them while hunting.
