How to Get Wireless Internet Services for a Laptop

Wireless Internet has changed the way that people use their computers. No longer are we tethered to a cord, now we are free to roam with our devices. Understanding how to use Wi-Fi can change your computer usage as well.

To get wireless Internet service in your home, you will need to set up a wireless network. This can be done by calling your Internet service provider. For a charge, they will come to your home and set up a wireless network for your laptop.

You can also set up your own Wi-Fi network by purchasing a wireless router. Hook up the router to your wired Internet connection. Then you can install the router by following the manufacturer's instructions. Set up a name for the network and a password that you will be able to remember.

Once you have a network in your home, you can utilize the wireless Internet on your laptop one of two ways:

  • Use your laptop’s internal wireless card. This can be done by flipping a switch on the outer case of the laptop. Simply flip the wireless Internet switch from “off” to “on.” Choose your network and input the password and you will be able to surf the internet from your Internet connection.

  • Purchase a wireless card if your laptop does not have an internal card. Although most newer laptops have them, older laptops usually need external cards. Plug it into your USB port and choose your network and password.
