How to Go to School for Dermatology
Dermatologists are required to go through a large amount of preparation and studying to get into the dermatology field. Individuals who are serious about dermatology can begin preparing as early as high school. There are several steps that you should take to go to school for dermatology.
Begin to prepare for medical school as early as middle school. Your college coursework will be heavy in sciences and math, so take extra science and math courses throughout your middle and high school years. Work extra hard to qualify for any advanced courses your school offers, and attend summer school taking extra biology, physiology or math electives.
Apply, and upon acceptance, enroll in a college that specializes in medical-related fields. You are going to continue on to medical school, so make sure your initial college specializes in preparing its students for this difficult transition.
After three years of undergraduate study take the Medical College Admission Test. Your score on this and your GPA will determine what medical schools accept you.
In your senior year of college apply to a variety of medical schools. Once you have been accepted you will have to take several exams. Some of the most notorious exams are the United States Medical Licensing Examinations.
Complete a residency program in dermatology once your medical school coursework is complete. Once your residency is done you will have to take the American Board of Dermatology Examinations.
Once you finish your residency and pass the board exam, you will be able to start practicing as a licensed dermatologist..
