How to Hook Up a Broadband Modem to a Computer
Setting up a broadband cable modem is not a difficult process and only takes about 30 minutes. Broadband is a high-speed cable transmission that travels through a coaxial wire. Coaxial is not just for television; it can also be used for broadband phone and Internet service.
Items Needed:
- Broadband high-speed cable modem
- Coax cable
- Ethernet cable
- Pull enough coax cable to allow it to reach behind your modem. The tiny pin in the center of the coax wire is very delicate, so be careful not to break it. Push and twist the coax to get it in place, and began screwing the coax cable line clockwise, directly into the back of the modem receptacle labeled "cable."
- Plug the power cord directly into your broadband cable modem box, where it is labeled "power." The other end of the power cord plugs directly into the wall outlet, or better yet, a power surge protector.
- Stretch out the Ethernet cable wire. This cable may be several feet long depending on the distance between the modem and the computer. If the cable is lengthy, be sure to place it behind furniture to avoid tripping over the wire or crushing it.
- Plug one end of the Ethernet cable into the back of the computer where it says "Ethernet," or in the receptacle that looks like an oversized telephone plug-in port. Connect the other end of the cable to the modem port labeled "Ethernet."
- Press the power button on the modem. Wait for the lights to stop blinking. This indicates that it is connected.
- Power up your computer once the modem has fully loaded.
