How to Inject Dog Vaccination
There are a few benefits to doing dog vaccinations yourself instead of through your vet. Medications are cheaper and you can be assured that they are freshly mixed. However, if there are complications, you’ll have to get to a vet immediately. Be sure you are skilled with injections before attempting to vaccinate your dog.
Materials Needed
- Vaccine
- Syringe
- Take the syringe and put the needle into the vial, pulling the plunger out to fill with the fluid.
- Take the syringe out of the vial, leave the syringe needle side up and plunger side down, and gently tap. This is to get rid of any air bubbles in the syringe.
- Barely push in the plunger until liquid begins to drip out the needle while still holding the syringe upside down.
- Pinch the dog’s skin above the shoulder and insert the needle into the area that you have pinched. Don’t go deep, inject right beneath the skin surface. This is the least sensitive area on the dog to put an injection.
- Pull back the plunger and make sure you aren’t in a vein. This is done by making sure there isn’t blood coming into the needle and syringe when you pull back on it. If there isn’t blood, push in the plunger slowly.
- Pull out the syringe when all the liquid is injected and gently rub the area where the needle was.
- There may be a little swelling and soreness where the needle was put in, but if you see any other symptoms, talk to your vet quickly.
