How to Install Knobs on Kitchen Furniture

Purchasing and installing unfinished cabinets and kitchen furniture gives you the power to stain and install hardware to accent the style of your kitchen. Knobs and pulls are the final flourish of an island cooking center and can be tied in to the cabinets, creating an attractive, stylish and functional kitchen.

Materials:

  • Knobs and pulls

  • Measuring tape

  • Drill

  • Drill bit the same size as knob and pull posts

  • Screw driver

  • Phillips head screws

Procedure:

  1. Count how many pulls you will need for cabinets and drawers. Some will put one pull on drawers and two pulls on cabinets. Other styles use one for both drawers and cabinets.

  2. Measure length and width of the the drawers in the island. If you are using handle style pulls, permit equal length from each end of the drawer and vertically center the handle. If using a knob style pull, place the post or center of the knob exactly center both vertically and horizontally onto the drawer.

  3. Mark the center placement of the pull.

  4. Re-affirm by placing the pull so that the screw holes or post is exactly over the mark.

  5. Drill a hole with the power drill slightly smaller than the post or hole for the pull.

  6. Place the handle or pull over the screw holes.

  7. Screw the screws through drawer and into the handle or pull.

  8. Repeat steps 1-6 for all drawers both on cabinets and island.

  9. Measure the top to bottom of the cabinet on the island.

  10. Measure one inch from the outside edge of the cabinet. Mark that point.

  11. Measure the center point of the handle pull exactly over the center point on the cabinet.  Mark the top and bottom of the pull onto the cabinet.

  12. Locate the screw hole on the pull. If using a two-screw handle pull, mark the screw hole locations on the cabinet.  Be sure the screw hole marks measure exact with the actual handle.

  13. Drill the hole for the screws slightly smaller than the screws.

  14. Place the handle over the drilled holes.

  15. Drill the screws into the handle with the other hand while holding the handle pull snugly in place.

  16. Repeat steps 8-14 with other cabinets.
