How a Chimney Damper Works

How to Install a Chimney Cover

The chimney cover is an important part of your chimney. It prevents sparks from escaping, and keeps animals and various other objects from entering your fireplace. It is exposed to the elements, and must be installed properly or it will not be able to work properly.

What you will need:

Measuring tape, ladder, cordless drill motor, Phillips screwdriver, Phillips screwdriver bit, work gloves, silicone sealer, masonry drill bit

Directions:

  1. Take the measurements of the chimney flue. Make sure that you have the perimeter around the flue's measurements so that you can find the right sized chimney cap.

  2. Position the base of the chimney cover on the outside of the masonry flue initially so that it covers only part of the flue (one to three inches). Use your Phillips screwdriver to tighten the screws around the flue's base.

  3. Slide the chimney cap's base into the interior of a circular tile flue, pushing it down to fit securely in position. You will then need to spread silicone, or an adhesive (if the cap came with it). The silicone should go around the flue's perimeter, where it meets the cap.

  4. Gently push the interior base of the cover into the interior section of the metal liner or pipe, forcing it into place securely.

  5. Affix a top mounting cap over the exterior edges of the top of the chimney, or the exterior perimeter of the chimney wall. Using your cordless drill and a masonry bit, drill into the concrete into the cover's holes.

  6. Make sure that the cover is secure by tightening masonry screws using a Phillips screwdriver.
