How to Install a Gas Fireplace
Gas fireplaces are an energy efficient way to heat your home in the winter. They also add that extra something to your living space, that resonates childhood memories of Christmases spent by the fire. You, too, could have such a centerpiece for your home and install it yourself quite simply.
How to Install a Gas Fireplace:
Step 1: Hire an electrician who is familiar with electrical and gas fixtures to install the fireplace hookups.
Step 2: Measure the mantel and transfer these measurements onto the wall. Draw marks onto the wall to indicate these measurements.
Step 3: Center the firebox on the supports to determine the vent hole location. Mark a 10 inch square on the wall for this location. Cut through the interior wall and enclose with wood.
Step 4: Drill four holes leading outside from the fireplace.
Step 5: Install the fire stop into the opening in the wall. Caulk both the interior and exterior walls.
Step 6: Twist the vent elbow to lock it into place. Connect the termination cap. Install the fireplace and connect the external vent to it.
Step 7: Cut the vent cap to connect to the vent pipe. Cut the sheathing. Attach the vent cap and caulk around the edges.
Step 8: Once your electrician has connected the fireplace hookups, schedule a building code inspection.
Step 9: Install the header and studs to support the mantle.
Step 10: Assemble the hearth. Lay the tile so that it is flush against the front edge.
Step 11: Install the mantle pieces. Install the cleats into the stud. Install the trim.
Step 12: Grout seams between the mantle and the fireplace. Once the grout dries, clean the tile with a damp sponge.
Step 13: Install the accessories including the glass cover and mesh screen.
