How to Repair Loose Bricks in Chimney
Over time, the chimney of your house may begin to deteriorate or crumble. Bricks can become loose and create leaks or allow further damage to occur. You should repair the loose bricks in the chimney as soon as possible. Here is how to repair loose bricks in a chimney.
Remove any dirt or debris from the area that needs to be repaired.
Using a hammer and chisel, remove any broken brick or mortar from the area around the loose brick.
Using a trowel, put fresh mortar in the area around the loose brick. Be sure to sculpt the mortar outward, away from the flue of the chimney. This will help the water to drain away from the flue.
You could also use caulk and a caulking gun to fill in the area around the loosened brick. Only use caulk if the mortar is not damaged or deteriorating. In the long run, it would be better to put additional, stronger mortar around the loosened brick.
Depending on the area where the loosened brick is located, you may need to provide support to the repaired area. Allow fresh mortar to dry for 24 hours before removing the support.
