How to Install a Router to Use With a DSL Internet Connection
Routers process the Internet signal that comes from the modem and sends it to all the computers on a network. The type of router you have depends on whether you have broadband or DSL Internet service. Each one is connected and set up differently.
Items Needed:
- ADSL or Ethernet cables
- Installation CD or manual
- Plug the telephone line into the back of the router into the ADSL port. If you do not have an ADSL connection, you will need to connect the router with an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet cable will connect to the Ethernet port behind the router. The other end should be connected to the Ethernet port behind your computer.
- Plug the router into a power outlet and turn it on. Turn on your computer and modem.
- Set up your router. If the router came with an installation CD, put it into your computer and open the program. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up or program the router. If it did not come with a CD, read the back of the box or the user manual to see how to program it. You can also contact your Internet service provider to have someone walk you through the configuration process.
- Reset the router and the computer to allow the installation and configuration to take effect. Open an Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, and visit a few websites to make sure the Router is working right. Check each computer on the network to confirm the router has been set up properly.
