How to Cure a Slow DSL Internet Connection

DSL Internet provides a fast Internet connection for your computer, and other Internet based electronics.  If you have DSL and find that it is running slow you should try to fix the issue so that Internet runs smoothly and connects properly.  To fix slow DSL check all wires that connect your Internet and make sure that your computer has the recommended hardware to run DSL properly.

  • Inspect all cables that connect your DSL Internet.  Make sure to look at the cables that connect the modem to the wall as well as the cables going into your computer.  Make sure that cables are in good condition and not frayed.  If any cables look damaged or broken replace them right away to see whether or not this fixes your slow Internet connection.

  • Power off your computer and your DSL Internet and disconnect all the cables.  Leave everything powered off for five minutes and reconnect cables and turn electronics back on.  Check your Internet after you have done this to see whether or not it is working any faster.  This will help a slow DSL connection because computers and Internet connections need to be rebooted on occasion so that they are not overworked.

  • Make sure to disconnect any electronics that pull off your Internet connection when they are not in use.  This is especially important if you have wireless Internet because items that use the Internet will wirelessly stay connected unless manually disconnected.  This can greatly slow down your Internet connection and make DSL seem slow.

  • Check your computer for any viruses that might have been downloaded by accident.  Viruses can slow down the speed of your computer as well as your DSL Internet connection.  Viruses can be located by running antivirus software like ones that are provided by McAfee.  If you do not have this software already loaded on your computer look to purchase a copy online or at your local computer store.

  • Look to see what the recommendations are for the DSL Internet you are using and whether or not your computer meets these recommendations.  If your computer is older or does not have the proper hardware to support your Internet connection then it will run slow.  Look to upgrade your computer with the proper equipment or purchase a new computer that already has the recommended hardware within it if your current computer does not meet the DSL criteria.
