How to Learn Embroidery Stitches

You will find that there is a vast collection of embroidery stitches since this art has existed for centuries. In your research, you will find that each embroidery stitch has its own name. However, be keen to note the design accompanying the name, as it is common to find that a particular stitch has multiple names.

Items Needed:

  • Crewel or embroidery needles. The size of the needle you choose is dependent on the fabric you intend to use. If you are uncertain, you can purchase a multi-pack.

  • Embroidery hoop/ring. The hoop is used to keep fabric taut making it easier to embroider. Advisably you should pick a small one and a large one.

  • Thread or floss. As a beginner, you opt for cotton thread and begin your work with three strands. Reduce the number of strands as you progress as fewer threads make the embroidery process more delicate.

  • A pair of small but sharp scissors.

  • Backing muslin.

  • Chalk or washable fabric marker.

Instructions for learning to stitch embroidery:

  1. Consider the type of material you want to use for your embroidery, as certain types of stitches are not applicable with some materials. Linen, cotton and muslin are a good choice as they are suitable with most stitches.

  2. Acquire an embroidery tool kit, which is an ensemble of the basic things you need to start embroidery.

  3. Use a piece of cloth to make a rough sample out the design.  After working out the rough spots after a few trials, you can stitch the design directly onto your fabric.

  4. Consult you reference book as you practice to troubleshoot technical issues.  It is helpful to use chalk or a washable fabric marker to outline areas in you design.

  5. Keep a journal of the best practices and settings, along with combinations for future reference.
