How to Level a Toilet on a Ceramic Tile Floor

Toilets can tend to get off level over time especially if they are installed on ceramic tile flooring. If you notice that your toilet feels wobbly or out of place then it probably needs to be leveled. This is a fairly simple task.

  1. Find your toilet's slant location. Position your level at different points on the top of the water closet as well as the top of the bowl to figure out the slant's exact location. You need to do this while the lid is closed.

  2. Use a wrench to make your adjustments. If the lower side of the slant is located at the left or right of the toilet, then use the wrench to loosen the bolt located on that side. If the lower side is at the front or rear of the toilet, you will need to loosen both bolts.

  3. Lift the lower end of the toilet. Take the rim of the bowl on the side that is low and gently pull it up. Slide three plastic shims underneath the base of the toilet on the low side. Position them about 4-inches apart from each other. Place them about halfway under the edge of the base, so that the thick edges of the shims stick out.

  4. Check your leveling. Put the toilet down on the shims and check the leveling again. If you have set the toilet too high then adjust the shims about a quarter inch. Continue adjusting until the toilet is level.
