How to Listen to Alternative Country Music

Alternative country music is a unique style of country music with various influences from the music industry. Country artists and bands have mixed everything from bluegrass to punk, rock to honky-tonk to create what is known as alternative country or alt-country. Listening to alternative country is made easy by all the different places you can find it.

• Turn on your radio and search the FM channels for stations that play country music. Most country radio stations play alternative country. Listen for times when the radio station offers listener call-ins. When the station announces they are taking requests from listeners, write down the phone number they tell you to use. Call the radio station and ask them to play your favorite alt-country song by your favorite band.

• Visit local night clubs that feature country bands. Many clubs play country music exclusively. You can find your local clubs advertised in the local newspaper. Look for the ads and note the time and date of the next alternative music band show.

• Check the schedules of your favorite alt-country bands for tours. Many bands travel on tour and post their tour schedules online. Radio stations also air the times and dates for popular bands and artists.

• Look through your cable or satellite television guide for channels that air country music programs. Once you find a channel, check their listings for programs that offer atl-country artists and bands. When you find one you like, note the time and date it is aired. Many programs are scheduled for weekly showings, while others are specials and aired only once. Write down the name, date and time of the program you'd like to watch or mark it clearly in the television guide.
